It’s an honour to be present for the HMCS Sackville Navy League Corps annual Ceremonial Inspection.

The opportunity to celebrate the year round hard work and dedication of cadets to band and drilling is a joy, especially seeing the pride cadets, the staff and volunteers who organize and lead, and the parents and families who faithfully support them all exhibit at this milestone community event.

Special salute to the cadets honoured with specific recognitions, and many thanks to chapter President Julie Briand for the kind invitation! Well done all. 🏆⚓️

Workers in Nova Scotia are being left behind. While people in other Canadian provinces get to enjoy shorter work weeks before overtime kicks in and protection from tip theft, the Houston government refuses to take action and make sure people can get ahead. We need better conditions, better protections, and a Labour Standards Code that actually protects working people.
On Saturday May 9th, 1992, Nova Scotia was struck by the tragic loss of 26 miners in the Westray explosion.

Anniversaries like Westray remind us why we must continue to push for safer workplaces and better protections for workers. When governments and industry make irresponsible decisions, it's workers who pay the price.

The standards we set for work are a matter of life and death, not just words on paper. Today we mourn those lost at Westray and redouble our committment to safe work for all.
My statement on the Houston government's cuts to NSCC. Full text below.

--

The news of cuts at the Nova Scotia Community College is deeply upsetting and devastating for the people who have lost their jobs, the students they support, and the communities these schools serve.

The NSCC creates good jobs in rural communities and trains the skilled workers our province depends on. Ninety-one people have lost their jobs – including librarians who deliver the research supports that students rely on. These losses are difficult for families in communities across the province and they have real impacts on student success.

Decisions like these from the Houston government don’t help young people build a bright future here in the province. These cuts are happening because this government makes decisions without doing the work to understand the impact they’ll have. There is clearly no plan and it’s our schools, our students, and our communities who are paying the price.

We need to support the places that make our province and rural communities thrive – not cut them.
